Dear readers, I thought you might enjoy reading the story behind “I Love You, Lord,” a guest post I recently wrote for Makes You Mom.
I Love You, Lord, but: Live in a dorm for three months? At age fifty? What a way to celebrate the Five-O milestone.
No nails or screws. No thumbtacks or tape, even—dorm rules nixed hanging any personal decor. At least the barracks sported fresh paint. Thin walls leaked every sound, each word spoken.
Ancient plumbing simulated banshees with microphones. A dawn shower risked waking the dead. A flush goosed pipes to operatic range. I never saw a drinking glass shatter at a high note but braced for the possibility.
Thin walls leaked every sound, each word spoken. (click to continue reading)
Laurie, what a gift to you. Isn’t God Amazing….to grant you this….I do wonder, why were you in a dorm at age 50?
Bill, my dear mate in all things wild and crazy, wanted to do a YWAM mission. We had three months of training in MT and spent two months in uber-rural Thailand,
My granddaughter, one month short of turning 3, was over the third of March on her a weekly visit. During her play she began whisper-singing and all I heard was “in your ear”. As I sat beside her she looked at me and asked it I knew that song, so I began to sing “I love you Lord” with her joining in.
The next week her dad told me it’s her favorite song, he sings it to her at bedtime and she sings along now, having learned most of the words. It was truly one of the sweetest sounds, to hear her endearing whisper-voice in worship.
Diane, your story touches me to stillness and a deep sigh, of wonder, and gratitude—not only that a sweet child of three loves my song, but that it’s your granddaughter, and your son who taught it to her. I remember like it was yesterday coming to visit you and attending church with your family and hearing it sung in public, for the first time. So moving. Beyond anything I’d ever felt before to hear a whole room of worshipers singing their hearts out. I even remember what I was wearing. Thank you so much for telling me, just what my soul needed today. Oh, the tenderness of God, the delight of longtime friendship!
I love this story Laurie. Your song has blessed my life in so many ways. It was the first song, along with prayer, that helped transport me into God’s presence in an attitude of worship. I still sing it and it will always be special to me….thank you for such an amazing and wonderful gift. Much love… Sue Bremer
Sue, thank you so much for reading the story and sharing your experience of my song with such love. Isn’t it amazing to have this shared ground and re-connection after so many years! I am thanking God again for the song, and especially for the ways it has companioned you. The song turns 40 years old this year! Sending love and gratitude your way, Laurie

Diane, I thank you for sharing this story with me. Such a tender moment you shared with her, and her dad. So blessed to know about this. Love you, friend!
