The star beckoned.

Uncharted terrain, bandits and unwritten tribal codes, regional airborne viruses—everywhere, monumental risk.

By night, they braved prowling beasts; by day, in town after town, the narrowed eyes of strangers.

Perhaps second thoughts eroded their confidence.
